AI support pricing in 2026: per-resolution vs seats
AI support tools are converging on three billing models: per seat, per conversation, and per resolution. They produce wildly different invoices for the same ticket volume. Here is how to compare them without getting caught by the fine print.
The three models, and who they favor
Seat pricing charges for your humans - which means keeping a human in the loop costs extra, and the vendor earns the same whether the AI resolves anything. Per-conversation (or per-reply) pricing charges whenever the bot engages, resolved or not. Per-resolution pricing charges only when a ticket is actually finished by the AI.
Only the third model puts the vendor’s revenue on the same side as your outcome. If the bot fails, you do not pay. That alignment is why per-resolution is becoming the default for serious buyers - but the word "resolution" hides most of the games.
Where the fine print bites
Three questions expose most pricing surprises before you sign:
- What exactly counts as a resolution? Some vendors bill any conversation the bot touched last. The honest definition: the customer got the outcome (answer accepted or action executed) with no human takeover - and escalations are free.
- Is there a platform or seat fee on top? A low per-resolution rate stacked on mandatory seats or a helpdesk subscription is double billing - you pay for the ticket and for the person who did not handle it.
- What happens at the edges? Clarifying questions, spam, abandoned chats, and reopened tickets - each should be non-billable, and you should be able to audit every billed resolution.
What the market charges in 2026
Public list prices (approximations - vendors change them and negotiate): Intercom Fin is about $0.99 per resolution on top of Intercom seats. Zendesk’s AI resolutions run around $1.50. Gorgias Automate works out to roughly $0.90-1.00 per automated ticket, billed alongside your ticket plan. Salesforce Agentforce spans about $2 per conversation, ten cents per action, or $125 per user depending on the model you pick. Enterprise-only players typically will not publish a number.
Resolvo HQ publishes its catalog: plans from $99 (300 resolutions included) to $999 (4,000 included), with overage between $0.45 and $0.30 by plan - an effective rate of roughly $0.25-0.33 at plan volumes. Escalations, clarifying questions, spam, and sandbox tests are never billed, and there are no seat fees.
How to compare on your own numbers
Take one month of ticket volume, estimate the share your data supports automating (order status, returns, cancellations are the automatable core), and price the same scenario under each model - including seats and platform fees. Then divide each total by tickets actually removed from your queue. That cost-per-removed-ticket is the only number that compares apples to apples.
And before you trust any vendor’s resolution rate, replay your own historical tickets through their agent. If they will not let you test before paying, that tells you something too.
Competitor prices are public list-price approximations as of mid-2026 and change; check each vendor for current numbers. Resolvo HQ prices come from our live catalog.
